How fast is hair actually supposed to grow, and does it slow after menopause?

Patel and colleagues (2025), published in the peer-reviewed journal Cureus, ran a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. It enrolled 105 adults and 97 completed the full 90 days, split across three arms.

  • Placebo, an inactive capsule
  • Biotin, 1.25 milligrams of a Sesbania grandiflora-derived botanical extract standardized for biotin
  • Biotin plus silica, the same 1.25 milligrams of biotin combined with 21.75 milligrams of Bambusa arundinacea-derived silica, the bamboo-sourced silicon compound that sits alongside shilajit in the Trifecta

The trial tracked four outcomes over the 90 days.

  • Hair fall, by counting shed hairs
  • Hair growth rate, by measuring a marked scalp patch
  • Nail roughness
  • Skin elasticity

What the numbers actually showed

By the 90-day mark, hair fall dropped to 20.61 in the biotin-only group and 15.71 in the biotin-plus-silica group, both significant against placebo (p<0.001). Hair growth rate rose to 0.55 millimeters a day on biotin alone and 0.57 millimeters a day on biotin plus silica, both significant (p<0.0001). Nail roughness and skin elasticity improved in the active groups too, and the trial reported no adverse events.

Read those two sets of numbers side by side and one thing stands out. The silica arm beat the biotin-only arm, but not by much, 15.71 versus 20.61 on hair fall and 0.57 versus 0.55 millimeters a day on growth. That gap is the honest size of silica's own contribution once biotin is already doing most of the work.

Is this bamboo silica working alone, or something else too?

No, and this is the part worth stating before anything else. The trial's winning arm was a combination of biotin and silica, not silica by itself. Nobody in the study took bamboo silica without biotin.

A few more limits are worth naming rather than glossing over.

  • The lead author is affiliated with the company that manufactures the tested silica and biotin extracts, a real conflict of interest, even inside a randomized, double-blind design
  • Cureus runs a lighter peer-review process than a specialty dermatology or nutrition journal
  • 97 completers across three arms means each group ran roughly 30 people, a real but modest sample
  • The trial did not report participant ages or note whether any were postmenopausal
  • No arm tested Optimum's exact Trifecta formula, since the trial did not include shilajit or pearl powder at all

None of that makes the finding worthless. It makes it what it is. This is the first randomized, placebo-controlled human trial to put an actual growth-rate number on bamboo-derived silica, funding source disclosed rather than hidden.

Bamboo silica does not work in isolation inside the Trifecta, and neither does shilajit. Each of the three ingredients has its own job.

Shilajit is not a hormone and does not add estrogen to the body. What its own separate human research shows, in skin and muscle tissue rather than the scalp specifically, is activation of the collagen genes that same connective tissue depends on, and improved perfusion at the tissue level. A 2024 review by Owecka and colleagues, published in Biomedicines, documented that estrogen receptors sit inside the hair follicle itself, that estradiol extends the growth phase of the hair cycle, and named menopause as the most common cause of the estrogen decline behind adult hair loss.

No trial has tested shilajit itself against a hair-growth-rate outcome. That is the same honest limit already stated about the bamboo silica trial above, and it holds for both ingredients rather than one.

That table is not a claim that our formula was tested. A trial measured a real effect at a lower silica dose than ours, and that is a reasonable basis for confidence in the ingredient at our dose. It is not evidence that a higher dose produces a proportionally larger effect, because nobody has run that comparison.

Researchers mark a small area of scalp, shave or trim the hair in that patch to a known length, and remeasure it after a set number of days, which gives a growth rate in millimeters per day. It is a direct physical measurement, not a survey or a self-reported impression.
