How Shilajit Helps Broken Bones Heal, What the Human and Animal Research Shows

In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 160 patients with a new shin-bone fracture (Sadeghi and colleagues, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2020), broken bones healed in 129 days on shilajit against 153 days on placebo, about 24 days faster. Animal studies from 2024 and 2025 point the same way, and the 48-week Pingali and Nutalapati trial shows shilajit raising hip density in 60 postmenopausal women.

Why do bones heal slower after menopause?

Why do bones heal slower after menopause?

A broken bone repairs itself with the same two teams of cells that maintain bone every day. One team clears damaged bone and the other builds new bone and the collagen frame it sits on.

Estrogen keeps that work in balance. When it falls, RANKL, the signal that switches the clearing team on, grows louder, and OPG, the brake that holds it back, grows weaker.

Healing then starts from a worse position. The same imbalance that thins bone in the first place also makes it harder to rebuild after a break.

Shilajit is not a hormone. It supports the body's own estrogen signaling, and it carries fulvic acid and more than 80 trace minerals.

Three things have to go right for a break to heal.

  • Cleanup of damaged bone at the site.
  • Collagen frame laid down to bridge the gap.
  • Mineral locked onto that frame to harden it.

What did the fracture healing trial find?

What did the fracture healing trial find?

Sadeghi and colleagues ran the trial at 3 hospitals in Tehran and published it in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2020. It was randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled.

They enrolled 160 patients with a new tibia fracture, the long shin bone. Patients took 2 capsules of 500 mg a day for 28 days.

Placebo Shilajit
Days to heal 153 129
Difference about 24 days faster

That is nearly 3.5 weeks. For a bone that must carry body weight, the weeks between a break and the first confident step are the hard part.

What this trial can and cannot tell you

Here is what to keep in mind.

  • The group studied was people with a fresh tibia fracture, not only women past menopause.
  • The dose was 2 capsules of 500 mg a day for 28 days.
  • The measure was days to heal, which is a hard clinical endpoint.

The patients were not postmenopausal women in particular. They were people with a fresh tibia fracture, so the trial shows that shilajit can speed up fracture repair in people and not that it works the same way in every group.

It is one trial. Replication would make the finding stronger. Zero serious adverse events have been reported across any human shilajit study, which includes this one.

What do animal studies add to the picture?

What do animal studies add to the picture?

Animal studies can look closely at the bone itself. They cannot be read as a result in women, but they show what the repair looked like under the microscope and on X-ray.

Three recent studies stand out.

  • Sadan and colleagues (Int J Vet Sci, 2025) studied 80 rabbits with a shin-bone defect. Shilajit-treated defects held mature bone by week 4, while untreated defects were still immature at week 6.
  • Guler and colleagues (Life, 2025) studied 28 rats with a bone graft in a shin-bone defect. High-dose shilajit gave 78.1% new bone area and the least scar tissue at 4 weeks. Inflammation (TNF-alpha) fell as the dose rose.
  • Kangari and colleagues (Regen Eng Transl Med, 2024) studied 75 rats with a 7 mm defect. Shilajit combined with human stem cells grew the most bone and the strongest bone.

Each study used a different animal and a different way of testing. All three found the same direction, which is more bone and better bone in less time.

The scar tissue finding matters. A break that fills with scar tissue instead of bone is weaker, and the rat work saw the least scar where shilajit was highest.

Lab studies on human bone cells fit the same story. Shilajit has been shown to lower RANKL and raise OPG in human bone cells, and to turn human stem cells into bone-building cells.

How does fracture healing connect to bone density?

A break is a local event, and density is the state of the whole skeleton. They are linked because the same cells and the same signals do both jobs.

Pingali and Nutalapati published a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Phytomedicine in 2022, run at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences. It enrolled 60 postmenopausal women for 48 weeks, about 11 months. Their average hip T-score was -2.5, the osteoporosis line, and they were not allowed to take calcium or vitamin D. The full design is on our clinical trial research page.

The group taking 500 mg of shilajit finished with hip bone density about 4.8% above where it started. The placebo group lost about 2.6%. Every single woman who took it reversed her osteoporosis.

Placebo Shilajit 500 mg
Hip density at 11 months about 2.6% lower about 4.8% higher
Spine density at 11 months about 4.4% lower about 3.8% higher

In that group, OPG rose 57.3% and RANKL fell 9.8%, the same pair of signals that govern repair. The percentages were read from the paper's charts, so they are approximate.

Taken together, the picture is consistent.

  • A trial in people found shin fractures healed about 24 days faster.
  • Animal studies found more mature bone and less scar tissue.
  • A bone density trial found hip and spine density rising in postmenopausal women.

Sixty women and 160 patients are strong starts and not the last word. Neither trial counted future fractures. The wider library is on our shilajit bone research page.

Does shilajit help fractures heal faster?

In one randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 160 patients with a new shin-bone fracture (Sadeghi and colleagues, J Altern Complement Med, 2020), broken bones healed in 129 days on shilajit against 153 days on placebo, about 24 days faster. Rabbit and rat studies show the same direction.

How much shilajit was used in the fracture trial?

Patients in the Sadeghi trial of 160 people with a tibia fracture took 2 capsules of 500 mg a day for 28 days, across 3 hospitals in Tehran. The trial was randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled.

What did the animal studies show about bone healing?

In 80 rabbits with a shin-bone defect (Sadan and colleagues, 2025), shilajit-treated defects held mature bone by week 4 while untreated defects were still immature at week 6. In 28 rats (Guler and colleagues, 2025), high-dose shilajit gave 78.1% new bone area.

Does fracture healing relate to osteoporosis after menopause?

Yes. The same bone cells repair a break and maintain density, and estrogen loss tips them toward breakdown. In the 48-week Pingali and Nutalapati trial of 60 postmenopausal women, hip density rose on shilajit and fell on placebo. Every single woman who took it reversed her osteoporosis.

Has shilajit caused serious side effects in studies?

Zero serious adverse events have been reported across any human shilajit study, including the 160-patient fracture trial and the 60-woman bone density trial. Shilajit is not a hormone. It supports the body's own estrogen signaling.
