She Had Been Through 11 Migraine Treatments in 30 Years. So Had the Woman Who Finally Told Her Why None of Them Lasted.
She is 57 and she has run payroll for a school district for 21 years. She had been through 11 migraine treatments in 30 years, including 2 years of Botox at $1,000 a round, and her chart had carried the same line since 2023. Then in April she got out an old phone list from her hospital headache group and started calling the people who had stopped coming. Here is her story, in her own words.

My neurologist pulled up my migraine log, looked at the last 3 months, and asked me what I'd been hiding from her.
I didn't understand the question.
"You went from 16 migraine days a month to 3," she said. "Your triptan refills dropped from maxing out every month to barely touching them. What have you been doing?"
I am 57.
I do payroll for a school district. 21 years in the same office. 1,100 employees. Every one of them gets paid on the 15th and the 30th whether my head is working or not.
The first thing I do every morning, before my feet hit the floor, is find out whether today is a day.
You learn to read it. There is a flatness behind my left eye. The kitchen light is louder than it was the day before.
Some mornings there's nothing there at all and I spend the whole day waiting anyway.
Last February I was on the phone with our benefits carrier. I needed to give them Wanda's extension.
Wanda has sat 2 desks from me since 2011.
I could see her face. I could see her in my brain somehow. I couldn't get the number.
I told the woman on the phone that the line was bad and I would email it over.
Then I sat with my hand on the edge of the desk until it passed.
That is the part I don't say out loud. Not the pain. I've had the pain for 30 years and I know exactly what it is.
11 Things, and What the Third Round of Botox Cost

Imitrex. Maxalt. Relpax.
Topamax, which stopped some of them and took my words with it.
Propranolol. Amitriptyline.
Botox every 12 weeks for 2 years at $1,000 a round.
Aimovig, which worked for 6 months and then stopped. Ajovy, which worked for 6 months and then stopped. Emgality. Nurtec now.
That is 11.
The Botox is the one I still think about. When the third round did nothing, the doctor who did them looked at my chart. She told me my weight was the problem. She said I would need $2,000 worth next time.
I am heavier than I was at 40. My scalp is not.
I paid it anyway.
I stayed in that job partly for the insurance. My husband Frank has said it out loud more than once. We can't afford for me to leave. The district plan is what covers the Botox.
The county posted a payroll supervisor position in 2023 and I did not apply. It posted again in 2024 and I did not apply.
I told Frank I liked where I was.
The list of things I will still commit to gets shorter every year, and I am the one shortening it.
Check AvailabilitySee Today's DiscountThe Line That Has Been on Her Chart Since 2023

My chart has said the same line at every migraine visit since 2023. Patient limits abortive to 10 days per month.
That is not a treatment plan. That is me counting.
The line is there because the medicine they gave me for migraines was giving me more migraines.
The answer was to take less of it. Nobody had anything else to give me.
18 tablets, cut in half, to make the month. I count what is left on the 1st of the month.
I told the office I was inside the 10 days. I was not.
I did the natural route too. Magnesium glycinate. CoQ10. B2.
I took all 3 for 4 months and I briefly thought I was cured. Then everything went back to how it had always been. I decided supplements were not for me.
The 4th neurologist I saw told me he was out of tricks. I remember thinking that at least he was honest about it.
At 1:40 in the morning after that appointment I typed what is left after you have tried everything for migraines into the search bar. Then I read about magnesium again.
She Went Looking for the People Who Stopped Coming

In April I got out the phone list from the headache group.
I had been going to that group at the hospital annex for 5 years. There were 14 names on the list and half of them were dead numbers by then.
I was not looking for advice. I had heard everything that room had.
I was looking for the people who had stopped coming.
You stop coming for 2 reasons. It got worse, or it got better.
I had spent 3 years assuming everybody was the first one.
Denise Kowalski picked up on the second ring.
She had not heard my voice since 2021 and she knew it before I said my name.
I asked her why she stopped coming.
"Because I stopped needing to," she said.
Then she asked me how many I was getting a month now. I told her. She went quiet for long enough that I checked the screen to see if the call had dropped.
She knew I had them. Everyone in that room had them. She did not know I was still in it. She did not know it had gone from 4 a month to 16.
We were on the phone for 40 minutes.
Denise is 62. She had migraines with aura from her 30s and she ran the same list I ran, in a different order. I sat in that room for 2 years and watched her fail at it.
Her father died of a heart attack at 61. So her internist runs a cardiac panel on her every year. One of the things on it is homocysteine. Hers came back high and he told her to take folate.
"I did not take it for my head," she said. "I took it because he told me to. My head was just the thing that changed."
You Did Not Try 11 Things. You Tried One Thing 11 Times.
"How many now," she said.
"11. I can list them."
"Say the list again. Slower."
I did.
"The triptans work at a receptor, during the attack. Botox works on muscle. Topamax quiets the nerves. Propranolol works on vessels. The antibodies block one pain pathway."
"That is what a migraine drug is," I said.
"They are all the same job. Every one of them steps in after it has started. Not one of them ever supplied a raw material."
She let it sit there.
"You did not try 11 things, Ruth. You tried one thing 11 times."
"They work, though," I said. "Sometimes."
"They stand in. A triptan is not serotonin. It does not give you more of anything."

"It sits in the seat for a few hours. Then it leaves. And nothing you can build yourself has changed."
"That is why the next one behaved like the last one."
What the CDC Measured in 6,793 Americans
"So what am I short of," I said.
"Folate."
"I eat."
"Not that kind. Your body makes its own regulating chemistry out of folate. But it can only use one converted form of it."
"One enzyme does the converting. There is a common variation in the gene for that enzyme. If you carry it, yours runs slow."
"The gene has a name. MTHFR. Most of the folate you eat stays in the form your body cannot spend."

"They would have found that," I said.
"Nobody looks for it. It is not on a headache panel." It is not on any panel you have had, because nobody orders it for a headache.
"It has been measured, though. The CDC ran it across a national sample, close to 7,000 people. 2 copies of that variation, and you are walking around with about a fifth less folate in your blood than everybody else."
"How much less."
"I have the paper on my phone. 6,793 people. 22.1% lower."
"20 years," I said.
Why It Was Always the Aura
"And it predicts migraine with aura. It does not predict migraine without it."
"They took 1,600 people out of the general population, not out of a headache clinic. The ones carrying 2 copies of it had double the odds of getting aura."
"In a second study, not one single patient with the normal version of the gene had migraine with aura. Not one."
I had a pen in my hand and I had not written anything down.
"You were never going to respond like the woman sitting next to you in that group. Every drug you took was written for the average patient. You are not the average patient."
"There is something else I have not said out loud," I said.
"Say it."
"The words. I lose them. In front of people who have known me 20 years."
"I know. And I am going to be careful here, because that part is not separate."
"What your body builds out of folate is the regulating chemistry. Serotonin. Dopamine. The same supply you think with. That is ordinary biochemistry and it is not a claim I am making."
"You are not saying it comes back," I said.
"I am not saying that. I am saying you have been carrying 2 problems to 2 different doctors, and they run on one supply."
"You were not the difficult one. You were running a step short the whole time, and there was no box on the form for it."
The Step Her Body Could Not Finish
"So what do I do about it," I said.
"You skip the step. If you cannot convert folate well, you take it already converted."
"Same as lactose. Nobody fixes the gene. They drink the milk that is already broken down."
"I have done supplements," I said.
"I did the same 3. Magnesium. CoQ10. B2. You were right about what happened and you were wrong about why."
"Those are cofactors. They help the engine run. They are not the fuel. Not one of them is the material your body actually spends."
"Then where do I get it," I said.
"Optimum Migraine Restore Formula. 15 milligrams of the converted form."
"Plus 1 milligram of methylcobalamin, which is B12 already converted, for the same reason you are taking the folate already converted."
Milligrams, Not Micrograms

"Go and look at what is in a folate supplement. Pharmacy shelf, first page on Amazon, does not matter. 400 micrograms. The big ones go to 800."
"That is what you would have come home with."
"That is 3% of what it takes. The big ones get you to 5%."
"It is not a smaller version of this one."
"And we know the amount is the part that moves, because somebody ran it both ways."
"The trial that got a result ran at 2 milligrams. 6 months, migraine with aura, and the share of them disabled by it went from 60% down to 30%."
"Then the same research group ran it again at 1 milligram. 300 women, 6 months. Nothing. Not on a single measure."
"Half the dose and the whole thing fell over." Their folate was not this form and their formula was not this one. What they were measuring was the amount, and that is the part that carries over.
"How do I know it will not cost me something," I said. "They all cost me something. Topamax took my words."
"That is the right question and it has an answer. It has been studied at this dose. No weight gain. No metabolic trouble. Nothing with movement."
"It is a B vitamin you already run on, in the form you cannot make enough of."
"That is all it is," I said.
"That is all it is. You are not adding another drug on top of 11. You are finishing a step your body starts and cannot finish."

Why Nobody Had Ever Told Her

"Then why has nobody told me," I said.
"Because nobody owns folate. It is a vitamin. You cannot patent a vitamin. So there is no company with a reason to put a sales rep in a neurology office to talk about it."
"There is money in the injection. There is money in the pill. There is no money in a vitamin nobody owns."
"Your neurologist has 12 minutes with you and 4 moves she was handed. Nobody ever gave her a fifth one."
I wrote it on the back of the refill slip that was still on the counter. I ordered it that night, before I went up to bed.
What Changed, Week by Week

Week 1 Nothing. I told Frank I had wasted the money and that I was thinking about stopping.
Week 2 I had an attack on the Tuesday. On the Wednesday I was not wrung out. That is the part nobody counts. You get a day off from it and you are too used up to spend it.
Week 3 The 15th came and I closed payroll without going out to sit in my car once. That hadn't happened since 2022.
Week 5 is the one I did not expect. I gave the benefits carrier Wanda's extension without looking it up.
Month 2 I ran out on a Thursday and the reorder did not come until the following Wednesday. By the Monday I was checking again before my feet hit the floor.
Month 3 The appointment. She had the log up on the screen. 16 down to 3.
I am not going to tell you my head cleared. I will tell you that I noticed, and that I sat there for a second afterward.
I ordered it for the migraines. The words were not what I was paying for.
That was the week I opened the blackout curtain in the spare room and left it open.
I was rinsing a cup at the sink that evening. I got all the way to the drying rack before I noticed the overhead light was on.
That was when I stopped calling it a coincidence.
Frank asked me about a weekend away in October and I said yes without doing the arithmetic first. I'd been saying yes and then canceling for so long that he asked me again 2 days later to make sure.
The county posted the payroll supervisor position again in November.
I applied.
I did not split a single one in November.
Not gone. Fewer.
I told her what I had been doing. She wrote it into the chart, underneath the line that has said the same thing since 2023.
I was not the difficult one. I was a step short, and nobody had a box on the form for it.
Wanda stopped at my desk in December and asked me what had changed. She said I seemed like myself again, and then she apologized for saying it that way.
I did not know what to say to her either.
Real Women, Real Results

Where Can I Get Optimum Migraine Restore Formula?

It is made by a family in Florida. They third-party test every batch and they post the results.
It's not on Amazon. They sell it from their own site and nowhere else. So the test for the batch you get is the test they post.
They make it in small batches and it does go out of stock.
About a dollar a day. One full dropper, once a day.
90 days to send it back if it does nothing for you. You can stop it whenever you want without a phone call.
Nobody ever offered me anything back on the $2,000.

I do not run the check in the mornings anymore. Most days I am up and moving before I remember to.
If you keep a log too, and the number on it has not moved in years, the link is above.
Denise did not tell me for 3 years, because she did not know I still needed telling.
So I am telling you.
Dr. Bennett has spent her career on the genetics of migraine with aura. She shares patient cases like Ruth's because the standard workup still has no line on it for what a patient builds her own regulating chemistry out of, and no reason to look.
