Shilajit and Breast Cancer Risk: What the Research Actually Shows

A 2020 in vitro study tested shilajit, referred to in the paper by its traditional name "mumie," against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, the two cell lines most widely used in breast cancer research worldwide. MCF-7 is estrogen-receptor-positive, meaning it grows in direct response to estrogen, which makes it the standard test case for whether something behaves like a hormone in a way that could feed this type of cancer. MDA-MB-231 is a more aggressive, estrogen-receptor-negative line, used to test a broader anti-cancer effect.
The result went the opposite direction of what a hormone would do. Shilajit reduced the viability of both cell lines and triggered apoptosis, the process of programmed cell death that cancer cells are often able to evade. The researchers found this happened through suppression of the EMT and TGF-beta1 pathways, mechanisms cancer cells use to grow and spread. The study also tested shilajit against MCF-10A, a normal, non-cancerous breast cell line, for comparison. The normal cells were substantially less affected than the cancer cells, which is the laboratory signature researchers look for, a substance that targets cancer cells specifically rather than damaging healthy tissue indiscriminately.
The follow-up, fulvic acid in a live tumor model
A single cell-culture study is a starting point, not a full picture, which is why a 2024 study went a step further. Researchers used fulvic acid, the active compound largely responsible for shilajit's biological effects, in a mouse xenograft model, meaning human breast cancer tissue implanted into mice, the standard way researchers test whether an in vitro finding holds up in a living system.
Tumor growth occurred in 100 percent of the untreated control mice. In the mice given fulvic acid, tumor growth was measured in only 12.5 percent of those given it prophylactically (before tumor tissue was introduced), 50 percent of those given it therapeutically (after tumor tissue was already present), and 12.5 percent of those given a combined protocol. In every treatment group, tumor growth was suppressed compared to the untreated controls, and the effect was strongest in the mice who received fulvic acid before the tumor tissue was introduced.
This is still animal research, not a human outcome, and it should be read that way. What it adds to the picture is that the anti-cancer effect measured in a dish in 2020 was not just a lab artifact. It held up in a living system.
A third, independent line of evidence
A separate 2022 study, working with fulvic and humic acid rather than whole shilajit, found the same general pattern, reduced viability in MCF-7 cells alongside an upregulation of the genes that drive apoptosis. Three separate research groups, using somewhat different preparations and methods, converged on the same direction of effect. That convergence is one of the better signs in early-stage research that a finding is real rather than a fluke of one particular study design.
The honest ceiling, stated plainly
